What do you do when a stranger shows up and suddenly she is included in everything you and your friends do? What do you do when this person targets one of the group for no known reason? What do you do when you find out a truth about this person that could destroy everything? This is what happens to Jane when a new woman comes to town and suddenly Sophie, Janes best friend, is spending more and more time with her instead of Jane。 Great characters and a story that will have you turning the pages。

I liked it enough to keep reading, but it was glaringly obvious to me early in the plot how the characters were actually connected。 I was curious to see how it would play out, but I wasn't in suspense and I would much prefer to be second guessing myself throughout a good suspense/thriller。 It's a quick, entertaining read but not a memorable one。 I liked it enough to keep reading, but it was glaringly obvious to me early in the plot how the characters were actually connected。 I was curious to see how it would play out, but I wasn't in suspense and I would much prefer to be second guessing myself throughout a good suspense/thriller。 It's a quick, entertaining read but not a memorable one。 。。。more

I am a huge fan of this writer and once again SE Lynes pulls it out of the bag! I devoured this book in two days flat。 I figuratively pulled my hair out feeling Jane’s frustration as she faced what quickly descended into ‘mean girl’s’ territory。 I felt her growing alarm and emotion as she dealt with fickle friendships and a lack of female support。Without wanting to give away any spoilers I am also pleased that Frankie’s situation was dealt with sensitively and he received a form of justice。 A we I am a huge fan of this writer and once again SE Lynes pulls it out of the bag! I am positive that I've said this is her best book yet when I've reviewed every one of S E Lynes' books。 I'm a creature of habit and I'm saying it again about The Baby Shower。 This really really is a wonderful read, I flew through it in two sittings, staying up far later than usual, totally engrossed by these characters and this stunning, immersive plot。 Female friendships, for most women, can be the most joyous of relationships。 They can also be the most toxic, the most hurtful and the most dam I am positive that I've said this is her best book yet when I've reviewed every one of S E Lynes' books。 I'm a creature of habit and I'm saying it again about The Baby Shower。 This really really is a wonderful read, I flew through it in two sittings, staying up far later than usual, totally engrossed by these characters and this stunning, immersive plot。 Female friendships, for most women, can be the most joyous of relationships。 They can also be the most toxic, the most hurtful and the most damaging experiences。 There are parts of the narrative within this novel that resonated with me so much that I wondered if the author had actually been part of my life。 Some of Jane's experiences and feelings totally mirror my own, although this happened to me over ten years ago, the scars are there, on my heart, forever。 Jane is a complex character。 I loved her。 She's a Northern girl living in London。 Happily married to a wonderful bloke; Frankie。 Jane has worked hard to get where she is, owning and running an independent coffee shop。 She has regular customers who seem to love her, and a group of friends who keep her sane。 The one blot on Jane's otherwise happy life is the fact that she doesn't have children。 She and Frankie face disappointment after disappointment every month, when yet again the test says no。 Jane's closest friend Sophie announces that she's pregnant, and whilst this hurts Jane deeply, she is her friend and she is happy for her, although weeping inside。 It is this pregnancy that is the catalyst for the events to come, and oh what a tangled and twisty and totally compelling story it is。 Not only is Sophie pregnant, but she seems to have found a new best friend。 A younger woman called Lexie。 Full of glamour, and glitz, designer bags and HD brows, it seems that Sophie has fallen for her really hard and that Lexie hates Jane。 Lovely Frankie has also changed。 He's working lots of hours, he's lost weight, he's distracted。 We, the reader, know exactly what's going on, but Jane is in the dark 。。。。 for now。 Frankie's story on its own would make a fabulous thriller, dealing with issues that are rarely covered in fiction。 Often covered up, looked at with disbelief and sometimes shame。 However, Lynes doesn't do stop there, she's woven this story with the inevitable and brutal break down of Sophie and Jane's relationship and it's so tough and so tragic and so moving。 I don't know what it is about females。 I'm not sure how we fall so hard for our friends, but we do。 We share confidences that we wouldn't tell other people, we have special moments and memories that can never be erased。 However, we can also be mean and bitter。 We can hold grudges, we can become paranoid and over sensitive and we can begin to doubt everyone around us, and most of all, ourselves。 The Baby Shower is so powerful, it is perfectly crafted and utterly compelling。 I was left breathless by this story。 It hit me like a punch in the guts and will never leave me。 。。。more

Once again, I found myself flying through the latest SE Lynes。 This time, the drama centres around a tight friendship group burst apart by the addition of newcomer, Lexie。 Jane finds herself subjected to insidious, subtle bullying that leaves her second guessing herself, feeling petty, confused and shocked at how quickly her tight friendship with Sophie unravels。 But this is an SE Lynes book, so this is just one of the themes in the book。 Premature-menopause, infertility, infidelity, trust, cons Once again, I found myself flying through the latest SE Lynes。 This time, the drama centres around a tight friendship group burst apart by the addition of newcomer, Lexie。 Jane finds herself subjected to insidious, subtle bullying that leaves her second guessing herself, feeling petty, confused and shocked at how quickly her tight friendship with Sophie unravels。 But this is an SE Lynes book, so this is just one of the themes in the book。 Premature-menopause, infertility, infidelity, trust, consent all come into play。 There are no prizes for guessing that Lexie is not all she seems。 The reader may catch on fairly early in the story。 The point is that the characters, Jane, her unwitting husband Frankie and love-bombed Sophie, are comprehensively duped。 As the truth reveals itself, the action jumps back and forth in time。 The book opens with a report of a catastrophic hit and run and so we know this narrative is leading to violent climax。 This and flitting to and from the murderous thoughts of the person in the hospital bed, keeps the reader on edge。 Clever, witty, pacy writing, studded with the perfectly-pitched little details that set apart SE Lynes psychological dramas from the pack。 。。。more

S。E。 Lynes has proven herself to be the psychological thriller master with this tense, mind-blowing and crazy book。 It was so addictive that I read half of it in one sitting and would have read the whole thing if it hadn’t have been 2am and my eyes were betraying me。 It begins with a woman waking up in hospital after a car accident。 Though in pain she is full of rage towards another woman who she needs to find before the woman finds her。 Only one of them can leave the hospital alive and she’s determined it will be her。 I was full of questions: who is this other woman? What did she do? And why does one of them have to die? From there the story moves between timelines, shifting from the hospital to events leading up to the crash, telling a story of lies, betrayal and toxic female friendship that will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end。The story is told by multiple narrators but it was Jane who resonated most with me。 Over the course of the story we see her whole world get turned upside down and it all begins when Lexie Lane is brought into her close friendship group by Jane’s best friend, Sophie。 Sophie thinks Lexie is golden and doesn’t see the callous and spiteful things she does to push her and Jane apart, instead choosing to believe her lies and turn away from the person she’s been closest to for years。 Jane’s heartache through all of this is palpable。 She is shocked that her best friend doesn’t believe her and that another grown woman seems intent on wrecking her life for no apparent reason。 You feel her internal struggle to believe it is even happening herself and her pain as she wonders why。 Her heartache is compounded by her early menopause and infertility, especially in the face of Sophie and Lexie’s pregnancies。 Having been through infertility myself, I know that pain of longing for something so much that it hurts and being happy yet also jealous when it happens for those you love。 It is powerfully but sensitively written and really pulls you close to Jane while wondering what on earth Sophie is thinking。 Lexie is a fantastic villain who is brilliantly written。 She is friendly and charming when she chooses, a facade that masks her true character, which is sly, calculating, cruel and manipulative。 The game she’s playing is so obvious to the reader and I immediately sided with Jane, yet I could also see why Sophie liked her and found it hard to believe she was doing such terrible things。 But I think it ultimately says more about Sophie when she refused to listen to Jane’s side of things than it did about Lexie。 After all, you can’t turn a true friend against someone with lies。 I think this will resonate with so many of us as I think most of us have unfortunately experienced these toxic kinds of female friendships at some point in our lives and will recognise someone we knew in Lexie’s character。 Brimming with tension and foreboding, The Baby Shower is a compelling, twisty and surprising psychological thriller that will make you feel all the feelings。 Trust me when I tell you this is a book not to be missed。 。。。more

Are we always in search of that picture perfect life to post on social media? The author dwells into these subjects and feelings for Jane, Frankie and Gareth comes naturally。Who, why and how are not too hard to really predict but even after knowing that this book is hard to put down。The book dives into really tough subjects like fertility, rape, PTSD and toxic friendships so a caution。 。。。more
Nickey,
I devoured this in one sitting! What can I say other than, I could not stop reading this story about friendship, lies and deceit。Jane and her three close friends go to a running club every Tuesday and out for drinks every Friday night。 One night, her best friend Sophie turns up with a new woman Lexie, and introduces her to the group。 Jane immediately gets a bad vibe from Lexie as she starts to belittle her behind her friends’ backs。Jane and her husband Frankie have been trying for a baby for yea I devoured this in one sitting! Lexie is faking the pregnancy! Jane tells Sophie but of course she won’t have anything bad said about Lexie, her new bestie! Things go from bad to worse for Jane as her Husband is trying to come to terms with a stupid mistake of his own。 Having won big on a scratch card he blows the money on a new expensive watch which inadvertently lands him in trouble in a way he could never have imagined。This is a story of how a toxic friendship can impact the lives of innocent people and how it is so easy for lies to be believed if they are convincing enough! I did guess one of the twists but that’s only because I read so many thrillers that I am always trying to second guess every character。 This didn’t make me enjoy the book any less。 I say enjoy, but my anxiety levels were through the roof half the time willing Sophie to listen to what Jane was telling her。 😂 This is my first book by this author but it definitely won’t be my last as I loved the fast paced chapters。 。。。more
